01/06/07 – Nicolas Feuillatte (France) Champagne Brut

Nicolas Feuillatte (France) Champagne Brut
In the run up to Christmas there is plenty of ‘special offer’ Champagne around. Often these are not quite the bargains they seem, with inflated headline prices that make the ‘discount’ more attractive. That’s true of Majestic’s regular price on the Nicolas Feuillatte, where their claimed price is 24.99, whilst Oddbins, Tesco and plenty of others will charge only 17 or 18 a bottle. But, as Majestic have a ‘half-price offer’ when you buy two, the selling price of 12.49 still makes this one of the best deals on fizz this Christmas. Crisp and elegant, there are also lightly toffeed aromas, with a hint of pear and apple. The palate has very good, slightly toasty weight, with a persistent mousse and nice, ripe fruit. Mouthfilling and generous, this has crowd-pleasing softness and weight. 12.49 on offer, Majestic. Martel (France) Champagne Brut Prestige If Majestic’s minimum case purchase policy puts you off, then Asda have a claimed 10 off of this Champagne too. It is a Pinot Noir-dominated blend that has a broadly similar combination of racy, crisp fruit but enough depth and richness to elevate it above many of the cheaper brands being promoted at the moment. 14.00 on offer, Asda.
