La Chasse du Pape Blanc de Blancs Brut NV
Rhone producer Gabriel Meffre has had considerable success with his Chasse du Pape reds, and now is extending the brand in to all sorts of other wines including this sparkling Chardonnay that is multi-regional, with fruit coming from the Languedoc, the Loire and Limoux. It is a traditional method wine aged nine months on the lees. It has a delicate golden colour and a good, healthy stream of small bubbles. The nose is mainly about ripe apple fruit and touch of candied lemon, but there is a background of yeastiness too. On the palate the wine is crisp and lively, with a prickly, tangy quality to the mousse and those nicely ripe, sweet and full apple flavours continuing. This is a nicely balanced wine, with just enough toffeed sweetness to make it very sippable, and a clean core of acidity to keep it sprightly and fresh. £9.99, Morrisons
