Louis Jadot (Burgundy) St-Veran ‘Domaine de Curis’ 1998
White Burgundies from the less fashionable southern region of the Maconnais have made it to ‘Wine of the Week’ several times in the past. Though basic Macon Blanc is rarely exciting, wines from the better villages are usually well worth trying: often weightier and less austere than Chablis, yet clean, fresh and more crisp the heavyweight chardonnays of the Cotes de Beaune. This has a pale straw colour and a pure, citrus fruit character on the nose with apple and honeysuckle nuances, hints of butterscotch. On the palate it has plenty of fresh acidity and good orchard fruit flavours with medium body and a nutty dryness that gives it a savoury, food friendly character.
