The Peter lehmann name on a bottle of wine is more or less a guarantee of a truly enjoyable and good value drop of wine. This perfect example is a strapping, powerful red from a phenomenal vintage, yet it is layered and multi-dimensional from ageing in a combination of French and American oak, and a balanced style that will repay cellaring. The nose is pure blackcurrant: if you are one of those wine drinkers that finds it hard to pin down aromas, try this one for size. That thick layering of blackcurrant is backed up by a subtle fudge-like quality and a lick of spice. On the palate that black fruit washes over the tongue in a dense sweep of dusty, ripe, sweet-edged flavour, with a kick of briary, spicy tannin underpinning and a juicy cherry skin acidity adding grip. What a lovely wine this is, being both ripe and sumptuous, yet at the same time balanced and quite complex.
