Les Vignerons a Tain l’Hermitage (Rhone) Crozes Hermitage 1998
This wine comes from the very reliable cooperative atTain, and has been recommended on the Wine Pages in previous vintages as well-priced Syrah with some personality. The colour is light ruby, and the nose is very attractive with a gamy, charcoally edge to light raspberry fruit and a little creamy note. On the palate the wine is juicy and chewy, with lean tannins and acidity keeping it quite edgy, but with lots of dusty, peppery black fruit and tart raspberry endowing it with a savoury character. It finishes with some spice and is perhaps a little acidic without food, but it would be a great partner to lamb, steak or perhaps some good fresh parmesan cheese. Sainsbury 5.99.
