Domaine des Fontanelles (France) Viognier 1999
The delightful Sauvignon Blanc from this Vin de Pays d’Oc producer has been my Wine of the Week in its last two vintages: a text-book sauvignon at a bargain price. Here, Domaine des Fontanelles have triumphed again taking the in-vogue and expensive Viognier grape and fashioning a wine that is, if anything, more impressive. It has hallmark Viognier characteristics of peach, apricot and blossom on the nose with a clean but full-bodied palate of pear and peach and a delightful orangy zestiness. The mouthfilling fruit is nicely balanced by tangy acidity and the whole package is quite delicious. Lovely, and as cheap as Viognier gets. (08/00) UK Stockist: Majestic 3.99
