Seppelt (Australia) Rutherglen Muscat DP63
The ‘liqueur muscats’ of Australia’s Victoria region, especially from around Rutherglen, are some of the best value sweet wines around. Many, like this one, are made in a system similar to Sherry’s ‘Solera’, where the wine is actually a blend of fractional parts of wines from many different years. This gorgeous and beautifully packaged wine is made from late-harvested muscat grapes, and has a deep tawny colour and burnt, creme brulee nose of caramel, marmalade, toffee and figs. It is dark, and mysterious. On the palate a thick, viscose texture floods the palate with sweet orange and toffee flavours, with nutty undertones and a chocolaty, treacle-pudding depth. Smooth, rich and intensely concentrated, it has terrrific length and quality. Oddbins, £7.49 per 37.5cl.
