Anthemis (Greece) Muscat of Samos 2002
Hurry if you want to include this as part of a mixed case selection from Waitrose Wine Direct. At its normal 9.99 it is a fabulous little wine, but until midnight on June 9th 2009, there’s 25% off of all wines at WWD, which would bring this wine’s price down to 7.49. Made from 100% Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains and running to 15% alcohol by volume, it is not in stores unfortunately. From the slopes of the island of Samos, this is a traditional Greek dessert wine matured five years in 500 litre oak casks before release. It has a rich tawny/gold colour, and a fantastically rich, sweet, stewed tea, walnut and sultana nose, with a delicious layers of toffee. The palate is just as rich and unctuous as promised by the nose, with that massive sweetness, the honey, fig and quince jelly fruit, and huge core of acidity powering through into a long, balanced finish. What a beauty. £9.99 per 37.5cl, Waitrose Wine Direct
