07/10/01 – Ashanti Chenin

Ashanti Chenin
These three Wines of the Week are bin-ends, scooped up by the clever Great Grog company. Each of these wines is delicious and drinking really well, yet they are half the price being asked elsewhere. The Yering Station Sauvignon comes from a fine producer and is full of passion fruit and gooseberry aromatics, and juicy, rich fruit. The Ashanti Chenin is a beauty. Fermented in French oak barrels, it has a nutty, toasty nose and a palate full of sweet peach and apricot fruit. The Ashanti Chardonnay gets three stars from SA expert John Platter, and is again lovely. Aged on its lees in French oak, it has a nutty, vanilla and butter character with rich, chewy fruit on the palate. A case made up of these would be a wonderful white selection for the run-up to the festive season, and Great Grog’s free delivery is the icing on the cake. Don’t hang around! 3.99 each greatgrog.co.uk (2003)
