Mas Oliveras (Spain) Tempranillo 2005
This 100% Tempranillo from Mas Oliveras in Catalunya, close to Barcelona, is typical of the new and revitalised regions and new wine styles that have swept across Spain in recent years. It is has a dark but bright crimson colour, and a nose that majors on shiny, supple black cherry-like fruit, with a liquoricy, tight character. On the palate there is real fruit sweetness here, with no oak influence, but just a silky, dense, mouth-filling richness of black fruits with a ruffled velvet smoothness as chocolaty tannins and lowish acidity add some structure and balance to a plush, but juicy picture. Lovely easy-drinking stuff this, and very stylish. £5.45, Corney & Barrow.
