Montalto (Italy) Sangiovese/Nero d’Avola 2002
This IGT wine from the island of Sicily blends the Tuscan/Central Italian Sangiovese with Sicily’s own Nero d’Avola in a perfumed, intense red with plenty of fruit and some classy, savoury structure. It has a rich crimson colour, and a ripe berry and chocolaty quality on the nose with some lifted aromatics hinting at violets. There are slightly leafy nuances too. It is fine and juicy on the palate, filled with sweet and concentrated fruit that is beautifully delineated, svelte and silky-textured. This is really bright and polished stuff, with crisp, ripe tannins and good acidity and very good length too, where a little earthy, warming, roasted fruit quality shows up. Very good indeed/excellent. £4.99 Safeway.
