10/10/2010 – Wrattonbully Vineyards, Tempranillo 2009

Wrattonbully Vineyards, Tempranillo 2009, Australia
Australia’s red wines are not all about Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, and this Tempranillo is a perfect example of the quality drinking to be found by exploring other varietals and blends. From Wrattonbully, a relatively new sub-region of the Limestone Coast near Adelaide, Spain’s great grape has been fashioned into a wine that brims with plum and raspberry fruit, offset by lovely spice and a sweet underpinning of tobacoo and vanilla from a few months in oak. On the palate it is deliciously easy to drink, that solid, ripe red fruit filling the mouth, but the layering effect of plush tannins, that creamy hint of oak and bright cherry acidity all combining in a stylish, lamb and other red meat-friendly wine of terrific style.
