11/06/01 – Normans (Australia) Cabernet Sauvignon/Franc 1997

Normans (Australia) Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc 1997
Normans winery in McLaren Vale is very much a rising star, for the production of red wines in particular. The cheap ‘n cheerful ‘Jesse’s Blend’ was a former Wine of the Week, but this is an altogether more serious example, though still exemplifying Normans ability to capture full, delicious fruit flavours whilst adding in a bit of serious structure. This deep ruby/crimson wine has a nose that is densely crammed with succulent raspberry fruit. Beneath, a solid, deep, briarwood, tobacco and almost punch-like mulberry character displays cinammon spice and nutmeg. On the palate it is warm and chewy, with full body and silky texture to deep, savoury blackcurrant and raspberry fruit and fine, chocolaty tannins. This has a tingle of acidity and a softening pillow of spicy oak in the finish. Dry, food-friendly and complex, this is a lovely wine that is also very drinkable. Safeway 7.99
