Guerrieri Rizzardi, Costeggiola Soave Classico 2011, Italy
Soave is one of those wine names that for many people means little more than a generic term for cheap and cheerful Italian white wine. But as is the case so often, there is Soave and then there is Soave. This comes from the top estate of Rizzardi, from a single vineyard planted on volcanic soils. It blends the traditional Garganega grape with a little Chardonnay, but it is unoaked. It has an intense lemon confit, peach and gently talcumy and floral perfume, and is very striking. On the palate it delivers a big burst of fruit sweetness that is concentrated and full, driving through with real clarity into a long, beautifully balanced and again, concentrated, finish.
