Vinalba, Patagonia Cabernet Merlot 2009, Argentina
Be quick if you want to buy this wine with 2 off, as the offer ends January 3rd 2012. A wine from Patagonia, hundreds of miles south of the established vineyards of Mendoza, it’s a bottle that has recently scooped an under 10 trophy at the Decanter World Wine Awards and which does indeed deliver a lot of quality and refinement at its price. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, the wine spends a year in French oak, but the nose has a juicy, fresh cassis quality with a background of creaminess and spice. On the palate it is a generous wine that is fairly big and lush (with 14.5% alcohol) but it has that freshness, with a bit of tannin structure and a sinewy backbone that suggest it will also cellar for a few years.
