Sonoma-Cutrer Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2006
This week’s WotW blows the budget a little, but it would be a terrific choice for roast turkey, or even roast beef this Christmas, and is a lovely wine. Though from California, it is a Pinot Noir in a style that is part way between the opulence of some New World pinots and the structure and subtlety of some Burgundian examples. It has delightfully clear cherry fruit on the nose, but a smoky, earthy, autumnal complexity too. On the palate the cherry fruit carries through, and the vanilla and cream softness is there, but never losing its focus of tannins and acidity. A lovely combination of weight and finesse makes it delicious and adaptable. £19.99, Waitrose, Majestic
