13/05/01 – Brampton (South Africa) Sauvignon Blanc 2000

Brampton (South Africa) Sauvignon Blanc 2000
Brampton is the good value, more inexpensive label of Rustenberg, a classy Stellenbosch winery. This 2000 Sauvignon Blanc is a corker, brimming with fruit and terrifically ostentatious with its 13.5% alcohol and no holds barred style. The nose is bursting with tropical fruit, lychee, citrus and a definite new-mown grassy edge. On the palate, a rich, mouthfilling texture has an edge of sweetness to super-ripe pineapple, pear and herbal fruit before bracing, deep lemon and mandarin orange acidity romps into the finish. Lovely summery stuff that’s punchier than most Chilean or southern French Sauvignons Blanc, less austere than the great Sauvignons of Sancerre, and costs a couple of pounds less than its New Zealand equivalents. Great Grog 5.69.
