13/09/04 – Sonoma Creek Syrah 1999 and Chardonnay 2000

Sonoma Creek (California) Syrah 1999 and Chardonnay 2000
This pair of specially purchased wines is on ‘BOGOF’ at Majestic right now (Buy One Get One Free). From the high quality region of Sonoma, north of San Francisco, the Syrah is probably the star of the show with its vibrant ruby colour and a nose that is very juicy and lipsmacking with redcurrant and cherry fruit, a hint of pepper and a nice cedary undertow. On the palate there’s a creaminess to the texture, and a raft of black fruit flavours licked with spices and an earthy grounding of tannin and savoury fruit. A seriously good bargain at this price. The Chardonnay has a touch of buttery vegatility on the nose, that suggests it is fully mature, but that’s not to say over the hill: there’s good quality here with vanilla-coated nose of peach fruit and a palate that is rounded and fruity, with a kick of spice into the finish. This is one BOGOF that’s well worth persuing. Both were £7.99, now £3.99 each when you buy two Majestic
