Doña Dominga Single Vineyard Shiraz 2010, Chile
Chile may not be the first country that springs to mind as a producer of Shiraz/Syrah wines. But its reputation has been building, thanks largely to new, cooler climate regions like Elqui and Limari to the north of the established Central Valleys whose Syrahs can show some Rhone-like character. But this single vineyard wine comes from the heart of the traditional winemaking region, in Colchagua. It has a nicely expressive Shiraz nose with just a little twist of cracked black pepper and herby spices, as well as plenty of black fruit aromas. On the palate the oak is well handled, adding a little underpinning weight, and the fruit is full and plummy, perhaps just verging on being a little baked, but then that nice Shiraz freshness comes through. The tannins are quite rustic and food-friendly, in a very good, modestly-priced example of Chilean Shiraz. More details and food matching suggestions in the video.
