Church Mouse, Falanghina 2008, Italy
Falanghina is a white wine grape of southern Italy, that is part of a ‘family’ of grapes that also includes Fiano and Greco, and which is normally made into very fresh, unoaked wines with lots of fat, lemony fruit. This example comes from Puglia in the heel of Italy’s boot-shaped outline, and has attractive aromas of juicy pear and lemon, but also a hint of crushed oatmeal and fresh straw. On the palate the wine has a mouth-filling weight and texture, with masses of the ripe, juicy pear fruit again before the big, waxy, lemony core powers through. It is a subtle wine in some ways, but powerful too, with a hint of honey in the finish. Click the image above for the full video review. £6.98, Selected Asda.
