La Rose Peyriere (France) Montage St-Emilion 2006
There’s a handy 3 reduction on this wine at the Co-op supermarket through until January 6th, making it rather a good buy for those who enjoy a modern, fruit-forward red Bordeaux. Made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, partial maturation in small oak barrels has given a vanilla and gently spicy note on the nose, as well as dense, creamy black fruits. In the mouth this medium-bodied wine has plenty of oomph, with a full palate of plum and blackberry fruit that has a slightly baked plum pie quality. This is backed up by more of that creamy vanillin oak, but with a nicely edgy axis of crisp tannin and moderate acidity keeping the picture fresh. At 7.99 this would be a reasonable recommendation, but at 4.99 it’s a solid buy. Co-op, on offer until January 6th 2008.
