La Metropole, Cuvee Classique 2010
This is a Pays d’Oc wine from the Languedoc that blends three classic southern Rhone grape varieties – Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier – along with a smidge of Chardonnay. As is always the case with these varieties the wine combines soft, sweet, fleshy fruit with a certain body and structure. Little custard notes on the nose join apricot and peach, with a nutty undertone. On the palate there is plenty of sweet stone fruit, but a broad, expansive texture and a finish that verges on a touch of astringency – but that acid and grippy character also means this easy-drinking wine has the clout to be a good and versatile food wine.
