17/06/01 – Vergelegen (South Africa) Chardonnay 2000

Vergelegen (South Africa) Chardonnay 2000
With so many Chardonnays in the world it is pretty remarkable that this is the third straight vintage of this wine to make it as wine-pages’ Wine of the Week. Vergelegen are becoming absolute masters of this delicious style of Chardonnay in South Africa, and in my opinion it is amongst the best in the world at the price. It is mellow and subtle, with some toasty butteriness on the nose over luxurious peach fruit and some lovely citrus undertones. The palate has a weighty texture and is buttery again, but crammed with summery fruit; lots of slightly sour green apple acidity keeps it fresh and savoury, but the delightful, silky, crystal-clear fruit and tropical nuances persist through to the finish. A stylish, balanced and very classy wine. 6.49 Sainsbury’s
