17/09/00 – Inycon (Italy) Chardonnay 1999

Inycon (Italy) Chardonnay 1999
The Italian wine industry has been on a similar path to the south France over the past few years; redefining itself in terms of grapes grown, winemaking philosophy and even the official classification of its wines. Areas like Puglia, Sicily and here in the Veneto had previously produced a mass of wine, some sublime, but most of it poor. The Inycon is a thoroughly New World-style wine; a gorgeous Chardonnay classified as an Indicazione Geografica Tipica – roughly the eqivalent of France’s Vins de Pays. This has a delicate butterscotch richness over orchard fruit and luxuriant tropical nuances. It has a lovely palate displaying just a sheen of custardy vanilla but also layers of deep, ripe juicy fruit. Balanced, and nicely sharpened by gentle acidity, this is a great value Chardonnay and would be ideal with roast chicken or pork. UK stockists: Sainsbury 4.99
