Weingut Grohl (Germany, Rheinhessen) Dornfelder Rotwein Trocken 1998
There are not many German reds on the UK market. This example is from the Dornfelder grape, specially bred to suit the German climate, and to my palate more successful than many German bottlings of Spatburgunder ( Pinot Noir). It is Beautifully aromatic with jammy, sweet, summer berry fruits on the nose and confectionery hints of parma-violets and cherries. On the palate it has good fruit – again sweet berries and a plummy note – but there is also a backbone of tannins and acidity that add a savoury character to this bone-dry wine. No great length nor complexity, but something different, interesting and very enjoyable to drink. 6.15 from www.theredandwhitewine.co.uk.
