Jacquart Champagne Brut ‘Mosaique’ NV
There have been a few spectacular Champagne bargains over recent years, but this one probably eclipses them all: Normally priced at 20.99, Majestic have slashed 11 per bottle from this excellent Champagne, bringing the price to a penny under 10. And what do you get for the money? Well, Jacquart Mosaique is a very stylish and grown-up Champagne, with a light golden colour and small, even bubbles. On the nose there is a dominant note of lemon and crisp apple fruit, with just a touch of yeast and cashew. On the palate the mousse is rolling and full, and the Champagne is immediately assertive with bold herbal and citrus fruit that immediately sets the mouth watering. A softer, pillowing breadth starts to fill in, yet the wine stays very focused and savoury, with lovely weight and texture, and a cutting acidity that really sharpens the finish. This is a fine Champagne, and obviously a terrific bargain at the special price. 50% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, 15% Pinot Meunier. £9.99 until July 29th 2004, Majestic.
