18/11/07 – Waitrose Chablis (France) 2006

Waitrose Chablis (France) 2006
Waitrose’s new range of own-label wines has impressed me greatly. But the real reason for awarding WotW to this one is to also plug the fact there is 25% off all wines and champagne at Waitrose when you buy any 6 bottles or more, until Tuesday 20th November 2007. Made for Waitrose by the Caves des Vignerons cooperative, this 2006 Chablis has a touch of mealiness on the nose but it is mostly driven by cool, crisp apple fruit and an expressive touch of mineral, almost salty character. On the palate there is good fruit concentration, though that fruit is dry and savoury, suggesting under-ripe pear and apple and a pithy note of lemon. The acidity is very good, and again hints at an underlying minerality in this wine, and leaves the finish clean, dry and well-balanced. Good quality Chablis and a decent buy at 8.99, but rather tasty at 6.74 if you get in quick.
