Viña Ventisquero, Yali Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Chile
From the relatively new region of Lolol, this Sauvignon Blanc is part of the Yali range, named after a Chilean wetland. Indeed, some of the profit from sales of this wine go to the wildfowl and wetland trust, and Vina Ventisquero offests the carbon emissions of transporting this wine around the globe as well as packaging it in plant-saving, lightweight bottles. But is the stuff in the bottle any good? Well yes, is the answer. It’s a mid-way Sauvignon, somewhere between Marlborough punch and tropical character, and a much more direct, steely Loire style. The palate has plenty of citrus acidity and a nicely creamy texture, leading to a longish, food-friendly finish. £6.49, Tesco, Majestic.
