Philippe Zinck, ‘Portrait’ Riesling 2008, Alsace
It’s always a pleasure to recommend – and drink – Riesling, and the summer is always a good time for these crisp, clean wines. Alsace is one of the world’s great Riesling strongholds, where the wines tend to be fuller than their German counterparts, and often richer than the bone dry, limey examples from Australia. This entry-level wine from the estate of Philippe Zinck (who has taken over from his father Paul) comes in a screw-capped bottle and has a typcial mineral and citrus nose, with a touch of waxiness. On the palate it is deliciously weighty and creamy, but the lemon and lime, succulent fruit drives through, just hinting at something more peachy and ripe. The finish is perhaps just off dry, but it it both sippable and Asian food-friendly. 7.99, Majestic.
