Les Jamelles, Reserve Mourvedre 2011, France
The famous Rhone grape Mourvedre lives somewhat in the shadow of Syrah and Grenache, but can produce some terrific wines that are full of fruit and character. This Mourvedre comes from the Languedoc and has recently been awarded the best Languedoc red under 10 by Decanter. It is partially made by carbonic maceration, giving it abundant fruit on the nose, bursting with ripe, deep black cherry and cassis and hints of spice and tobacco. On the palate it has a certain silky fruit sweetness, but it has a bit of grip and structure that elevates it above some other carbonic maceration wines, with a bit of meaty, food-friendly depth too.
