Groote Post, Sauvignon Blanc 2012, South Africa
From its spiritual home in France’s Loire valley, the Sauvignon Blanc grape has burst into worldwide domination of fresh white wine styles, thanks largely to Marlborough in New Zealand introducing an extra, dramatically powerful expression of the grape to the repertoire. Today many countries are making excellent Sauvignons, and South Africa is up amongst the best. This is a really good example, coming from the cool and Atlantic influenced Darling region north of Cape Town. It has a beautifully punchy citrus nose, but a mineral and salty maritime influence too and just a touch of herbaceous character. It is mouthwatering stuff, with lime and grapefruit, a hint of riper Ogen melons, but really it is all about tang, focus and ultimate refreshment.
