19/03/00 – Domaine des Deux Roches (Burgundy) St-Veran 1998

Domaine des Deux Roches (Burgundy) St-Veran 1998
Regular visitors will have witnessed me raving about the lovely and good value Chardonnays that can be found in Burgundy’s Maconnais region in the past. Producers like Bonhomme and Thevenet stand out, but Deux Roches is another highly-regarded domaine and on this evidence I see why. This outstanding wine has a pale gold colour and absolutely typical nose of melon, pear, honeysuckle and a hint of butter. On the palate it is weighty and full-textured with rounded but clean flavours of apple and pear, a certain lusciousness and nuances of brazil nut and cinammon. Acidity is subtle but ample and the finish is moderately long and fresh. I drank this with pan-fried Seabass in a white wine, leak and vanilla sauce.
