Primi (Spain) Rioja 2000
This is the very modern face of Riojan wine, a vibrant, discreetly-oaked red wine designed for today’s tastes and today’s market. Winner of a Gold medal in the 2001 International Wine Challenge, Primi is a new wine forged by the UK agency Bibendum, who worked with Bodegas Gurpegui Muga and ‘flying winemaker’ Jacques Humeau to create a wine from the classic Rioja grapes of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano which is driven by bold fruit flavours rather than the sometimes smothering affect of oak. It has plenty of sweet cherry fruit on the nose, and a dry, savoury palate that displays more cherry and plum fruit and a chewy, gently tannic core with good acidity. Balanced and refined, this is a fruity and food-friendly red of some style.4.99 Tesco, Bibendum
