Montgravet, Pays d’Oc Cabernet Merlot 2010, France
This 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend comes from the Languedoc in the South of France and is an inexpensive and honest little wine that will make a useful standby: fruity and easy drinking enough to sip on its own, but with a bit of savoury appeal for food-matching. The nose has creamy black fruit to spare, but there’s a rhubarb or beetroot-like edge of vegatility that suggests a slightly cooler climate and which is a characteristic of many Bordeaux-style blends. In the mouth the fruit is sweet and creamy, with a little oak underpinning and more of that herby, savoury green cut making this slightly better than your average fruit-forward quaffer.
