Knightor, Madeleine Angevine 2011, England
English wine has been on the up and up with its international reputation growing as quality has increased. But its fame currently rests mostly on sparkling wines, with table wines still a much harder sell. In part that’s to do with price, as making wine in the south of England is an expensive business. This is a very good example of a serious, dry and stylish English white wine, though no doubt the price is a little on the steep side compared to wines of similar quality from elsewhere. It is fresh as a daisy with only 11.5% alcohol, and bone dry, the nose subtle with lemon and floral notes. On the palate it has a mountain stream clarity, driven by its freshness but with a subtle, Loire-like hint of grassiness too. Watch the video for more information and specific wine and food ideas.
