Sainsbury (Italy) Grecanico di Sicilia
Like many other Sicilian whites, this wine has a wonderful lemony oiliness about it, with thick texture and a very decisive fruit quality. Grecanico is one of half a dozen southern Italian white wine grapes which reference their Greek origins, and all of which seem capable of making full-textured, clean wines, with hints of Sauvignon-blanc-like intensity, but a character all of their own. The colour of this wine is a very pale green, and the nose offers up subtle but very attractive notes of ground almonds, quince and citrus. On the palate that oily texture fills the mouth despite a modest 12% alcohol, with downy peach-skin flavour, that lemon verbena zestiness and again that background suggestion of nuts or wild herbs. The acid balance is perfect for this wine, which finishes with plenty of verve and is delicious well-chilled as an aperitif. £3.99 Sainsbury’s
