Trapiche, Broquel Bonarda 2009, Argentina
There are many countries that would love to have the success that Argentina has had with the Malbec grape: for many people this signature grape defines Argentina and puts it on the map. But Argentina of course does many other grape varieties and here we have Bonarda, originally a northern Italian variety, grown here by Trapiche in Mendoza. To be absolutely honest I think the oak is a touch overdone – just a little too much vanilla and toast – but then there is a lovely red fruit brightness about the wine on the nose: it is big and bold, with that depth of toast, but a fresh appeal too. On the palate there’s intense blackcurrant and cherry fruit that is focused, though plenty of cleansing and typical acidity and that support of oak adds light and shade. A big wine with 14.5% alcohol and all that oak, but it is a wine of quality and of course, something just a little bit different.
