Waipara Hills, Pinot Noir 2008, New Zealand
It wasn’t so long ago that you couldn’t buy a Pinot Noir from the Central Otago hot-spot for much less than 20. But as production has increased prices have eased, and this very nice example is going to be on promotion at less than a tenner from February 9th 2011 – stick it in your diary. It has a fine Pinot nose with earthy and truffly nuances to redcurrant and cherry fruit, underpinned by a little pillow of mellow oak. On the palate the fruit is really quite explosively bright, filling the mouth with quite luscious red berry flavours, but with a sappy, herby energy too and a nice line of tannin and acidity. Dry, savoury but clear and bountiful, it is a lovely Pinot. 12.99, but 9.99 from February 9th 2011 for three weeks, Sainsbury’s.
