Tamellini, Soave 2008, Italy
My first Wine of the Week of 2011 is chosen from one of the many January sales that are on this month. The wine is one of Italy’s best known white wine names, Soave. There’s a lot of non-descript Soave wine about, but a few producers are really upping quality and making very fine wines. This example from Tamellini is made from 100% Garagena and has a lovely hint of honey and nutty, seedy character on the nose as well as Cox’s Pippin and lemon fruit in a layered, complex profile. On the palate there’s a touch of oiliness to the texture, and that delicious combination of freshness and richness, with some real minerality and lots of waxy lemon fruit. It is a lovely, savoury, quite serious wine that is drinking beautifully and it is down from £10.99 to £7.99 at , from January 4th – 31st 2011.
