20/02/2011 – Domaine du Pech Rome, Tempranillo 2009

Domaine du Pech Rome, Tempranillo 2009, France
A highly unusual wine from the seldom-seen Languedoc appellation of Vin de Pays de Caux (I had to look it up), made from Spain’s great grape Tempranillo, and a vineyard that was planted in 1980. The wine has a very vibrant purple colour and beautifully clean, graphite-touched nose of juicy blackberries. On the palate there’s a creaminess to the texture that is very alluring, the richness of the fruit is concentrated and coats the tongue, and hints of tobacco and subtle spices marry with the ripe tannins in the finish. Really very stylish stuff. Best of all, it is one of a range of wines on offer until the 18th of March 2011, where 10% of the price of the wine goes directly to the Wine Relief charity which helps relieve poverty in the UK and Africa. 7.99 in Majestic.
