Pizarras de Otero, Mencia 2010, Bierzo, Spain
Quietly but steadily the northern Spanish region of Bierzo has become really quite fashionable, with most retailers stocking at least one white or red from the region, especially those made from the indigenous white grape Godello or, as in this case, the local red grape Mencia. This example has a lovely fresh fruitiness on the nose, and a certain brightness with some herbs and flowers and a real bit of zing. On the palate cherry and plum flavours dominate, with a little roasted fig quality, but real crunch and freshness. The tannins are not big or overpowering, but along with fresh acidity they give grip and tension. Despite 14% ABV, this is nimble and poised.
