Domaine de la Rocaliere (Rhone) Lirac 1997
Lirac lies just across the river from Chateauneuf-du-Pape and was once known only for decent rose wines. Recently they have been gaining more of a reputation for their reds, normally a blend of typical local varieties like Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. This has a very dark ruby/black colour and although the nose is at first a little jammy, it goes on to reveal charcoally, earthy baked plum fruit. The palate is smooth and medium-bodied with round, juicy flavours of plum, blackcurrant and berries. There are some grippy tannins, good acidity and sour black cherry nuances that give it a serious, chewy edge. UK Stockists: Majestic 6.99
