Yeringa Ridge (Australia) Shiraz/Cabernet 2001
This is one of a really classy range of wines being imported into the UK by the go-ahead young team at New World Wines, a long-term sponsor of wine-pages. Run by enthusiastic Antipodeans, the company has introduced several new labels to the UK, and you will find their wines popping up in restaurants and retail stores everywhere. Yeringa Ridge is brand new to this country. This Shiraz/Cabernet blend is a semi-opaque crimson colour, with a big, warming, mulberry, chocolate and spicy eucalyptus nose. There are little peppery hints, and on the palate there’s a leafy element, with a tobacco note to sweet, dark, raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. An underpinning of sweet oak gives way to more of that pepper and spice richness, with warming tannins and a long, dry finish. This is a well-made wine that offers a lot for the money, as does its sibling, the Yeringa Ridge Semillon/Chardonnay, where an initial hit of sweet custrady oak gives way to a limpid quality of stone fruit and citrus on the palate. Both highly recommended and terrific value. New World Wines 5.99.
