Luigi Einaudi, Micune Langhe Rosso 2009, Italy
This Piedmont wine comes from a producer who also makes lovely Dolcetto and Barolo wines, but this week I have chosen this Langhe Rosse blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with the local Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes, aged in older oak barrels. On the nose it brims with black cherries and blackcurrant, infused with a smoky tobacco quality and a herbal touch that is authentically Italian. On the palate it is delicious: it is big and creamy with its 14% alcohol, but a big pillowy weight of black fruit is nicely cut by smooth tannins and gentle but persistant acidity, making it an excellent food wine too. 9.90, Exel Wines (exelwines.co.uk).
