Mas Oliveras (Spain) Cabernet Sauvignon Rosado 2006
Well, given that we’ve had a pretty miserable July and August, but there’s still time for a late burst of Indian summer, I thought I’d squeeze in one more rose as Wine of the Week. This one comes from Mas Oliveras, an estate established in 1898 by the Roqueta family, who still own and run it today. In the foothills of the Pyrenees, the winery takes its name from the ancient olive groves, in which its vineyards were first planted. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon rose has a vivid pale crimson colour and a nose of cherry bubblegum and soft strawberry pulp, with a clean, crisp character. On the palate there is really nice fruit intensity, with a burstingly fresh, juicy cherry fruitiness, but at the same time a fresh, dry character with some tart raspberry acidity and a little suggestion of pithy citrus keeping things mouthwatering and moreish. A very nice style of dry rosado, with not too much extraction or sweetness, and a fresh, crisp appeal. 5.45, Corney & Barrow.
