Tons de Duorum 2010 white & 2008 red, Portugal
A pair of wines from a new producer in Portugal’s Douro Valley, a joint project between two of the country’s top winemakers. There’s more and more table wine coming from the Douro (the traditional home of Port), but so far white wines are quite scarce. However this one, from vineyards at altitude, proves the whites can be fresh and delicious. A blend of local grapes, it has punchy, Sauvignon-like aromas with a touch of herbs and a lime and melon-skin character. On the palate it is weighty but fresh, with ripe apple and melon flavours, some savoury acid grip and a long finish. The red is another blend of Douro grapes and brims with berry fruit and floral nuances, before a palate packed with berries and some rustic tannic charm.
