Asda Extra Special Dao 2011, Portugal
Dao is a region in the north of Portugal that benefits from elevation, which in turn gives slightly cooler conditions that mean the red wines of the Dao tend to have a brightness and refined edge. This example is all about raspberry freshness – not so much the plum or cassis darkness, but bright, edgy fruit with some herbal and peppery character too. In the mouth there is a bit of liquoricy grip from tight tannins and good levels of acidity, and again it is all about that edgy, energised fruit that makes this a refined and savoury wine with broad food matching appeal.
