25/07/2010 – Yealands Estate, Pinot Gris 2009

Yealands Estate, Pinot Gris 2009, New Zealand
Expect to see more and more Pinot Gris on the shelves from Marlborough in New Zealand, as winemakers there add new strings to their bow, trying to carve out a market for more than just Sauvignon Blanc. This, from a huge new estate close to the sea in the Awatere Valley has a very appealing nose, with lots of ripe pear, juicy Ogen melon and a hint of nuttiness. There’s a certain exoticism to some little notes of papaya and pineapple too. On the palate this has a rich, creamy, mouth-filling texture with lots of fruity weight and density, and a sense of concentration. There is ample acidity to freshen the finish, in a deliciously gluggable wine. Available at 8.85 – 9.95
