Domaine du Bois-Malinge, Muscadet Sevre-et-Main Sur Lie, 2009
Muscadet is one of those unfashionable wines that has its followers, but is not within the sights of most everyday wine drinkers. That’s a pity when the wine is as enjoyable as this, an example from the top Sevre-et-Main region and aged ‘Sur Lie’, in other words in contact with the ‘lees’, the spent yeast cells that are left after fermentation. That can add texture and flavour richness. On the palate this has lots of vibrant lemon and cool, green apple fruit, but also a salty, seashell note (that is very typical) and just a hint of oatmeal in the background. On the palate that fresh, pithy, mouth-watering style continues but again just broadening slightly into a food-friendly dry finish thanks to that lees ageing.
