Pazo das Tapias, Alma de Blanco Godello 2010, Spain
Along with its red partner Mencia, the white Godello grape has become increasingly fashionable with most supermarkets and wine merchants now stocking at least one or two examples, though almost always from the Bierzo region of northwest Spain. This Godello hails from the seldom seen appellation of Monterrei in Galicia, next door to Rias Baixas. Here Godello is their specialist variety. This has a subtle but delightful nose where a hint of baked apple pie joins with some succulent pear. On the palate it has the classic counterpoints of ripe, sweet orchard fruits and a certain powerful minerality that makes Godello so appealing. Well priced and a seafood-matching banker. The wine is in the reborn Oddbins chain, which has 34 shops mostly in London and major Scottish cities, but trading online too.
